- Leader in the use of Building Information Modeling
- Used BIM for large scale master planning and architectural projects for the US Government
- US Government Projects for the Past 30 years
- Custom programs and databases in relation to Building Information Modeling
Onuma & Associates has been providing architectural services since 1974 to a variety of clients throughout the world. As a US owned firm, based in California and Tokyo, Japan, we have been working with various US Government Agencies on projects throughout the Pacific. Webscape was formed in 1994 as a separate company to provide technology services related to the design and construction industry. The two firms are intertwined with the philosophy that in order to service both architecture and technology it is imperative to be involved with both.
The firm has been actively using building information modeling (BIM) and the virtual building processes for over 10 years on all projects. Webscape is considered to be a leader in the use of these methodologies. Starting in 1994 Onuma & Associates used Archicad and databases to manage several large scale master planning projects for the US Navy and Army Corps of Engineers. The process used in these projects included extensive use of customized intelligent objects for the BIM process. At the time the clients on those projects were not familiar with the BIM process. We were one of the first firms in the world to use Archicad on projects of this scale for the US Government. This experience gave the firm a complete understanding and the knowledge to expand the potential of the virtual building process.
Webscape Innovations
- One of the first firms to use the virtual model on large scale US Government Projects
- Coined the term and concept of The Object Genome Project
- Mapping the genetic code of the built environment
- Capturing the logic of built environment
- Developed planning tools using intelligent objects for US Government Planning Projects
- Developed custom API tools for the BIM process
- Developed various intelligent object product catalogs
- Developed intelligent structural system
- Prototyping object based security planning system with Standing Stone Consulting
- Cofounder of the GDL Alliance
- Cofounder of the SHiP Group
Onuma / Webscape was responsible for the following US Coast Guard Projects:
- Intelligent Coast Guard Object Libraries. These objects included: bollards, Steel piling, buoys and boats.
- US Coast Guard Seattle Virtual Building Model
- US Coast Guard Seattle SQL Database and Web Site of Seattle Model
- US Coast Guard Charlston SQL Database and Web Site of Seattle Model
The firm is considered an innovator in the use of the virtual building in such projects such as the
- Intelligent Object Hangar System
- Master Planning Tools
- Object Genome System
- Security Planning System
Project Web Sites and Databases
Since 1994 Onuma / Webscape have been using Internet web sites to manage all projects. BIM has the capability of generating immense amounts of project specific data and Webscape has been fine tuning how to interact with this data both off line and online through database, web site and custom software.
The key to success in these systems is the ability to identify the logic and then implement it into the BIM and into custom systems and databases to integrate the process.
Recent awards include an Honor award for the 2002 AIA Awards of the Pasadena and Foothill Chapter for the Object Genome Project. This project categorized and created a logical explanation of the power of intelligent objects created by Webscape for various BIM projects.

President and Co-Founder GDL Alliance
Registered Architect, California, USA
Registered Architect, Nevada, USA
Kimon Onuma, principal of Onuma & Associates and president of Webscape has been actively involved in the industry promoting and defining the use of the virtual model. He has been a guest speaker at numerous events. The firms work with the virtual model has been published including an article in this Januarys Architectural Record magazine. He is the cofounder and president of The GDL Alliance, which now has over 500 members worldwide. The GDL Alliance focuses on furthering the understanding and use of BIM and intelligent objects in the virtual building. His relationships and connections to the other leaders in this technology sphere give him access to the best minds in the industry for support on projects.
In October 2002 Mr. Onuma was directly involved in presenting BIM and intelligent objects to the President of ESRI, Jack Dangermond. This meeting lead to the closer links that are developing now between GIS and intelligent object technology. The potential of linking GIS data closer to the BIM model creates many new ways of managing and mining the valuable data of the BIM.
Mr. Onuma is a founding member and the Director of Technology for the Strategic High Performance Integrated Planning Group ( SHiP).
